iPhone First Day Sales Through the Roof

Gadget lovers were quick to pick up the latest new "toy" offered by Apple on June 29th. The iPhone first day sales are estimated at 128,000 phones sold at Apple stores and 72,000 at AT&T stores, according to Global Equities Research. All stores were open until twelve midnight on June 29th so that customers could come in during the day as well as the evening hours.

Shoppers have been enthusiastic about the iPhone, and AT&T now says that most of its 1800 stores do not have the iPhone in stock. The iPhone is still available at the 164 Apple store locations. The iPhone can be ordered online from the Apple website, but there is a two to four week wait for delivery.

Stores carrying the iPhone on the first day did run into challenges as many people were trying to sign up at the same exact time. There were also some delays in switching customers over from their existing cell phone carriers.

Even before the first day of sales, the iPhone was already wildly popular. In fact one person paid as much as 100,000 to get his hands on an iPhone – and to support a good cause. As of this writing the lucky winner still remains anonymous.

Keep A Child Alive, a charity that gives anti-retroviral treatment to children with AIDS in Africa, held an auction for the first iPhone, two Jawbone Bluetooth headsets, two round-trip plane tickets (domestic flights) and two V.I.P. passess to the Keep A Child Alive Black Ball.

The charity auction item was donated by Spike Lee, the filmmaker well-known for films such as Junglefever and Girl 6. He purchased the iPhone at Apple’s Soho store in New York City.

The Keep A Child Alive Black Ball will be held on October 25th in New York City and will honor the singer/philanthropist/activist Bono. The iPhone will get a special personalized voice mail greeting from Alicia Keys before being presented to its new owner at the ball.
